When we were young we wanted to travel and visit everywhere we could. We wanted to travel to Africa and hang out with lions and monkeys. We wanted to travel to France and see the Eiffel Tower. We wanted to travel to Scotland and visit castle after castle. Some of us have been lucky enough to make these dreams a reality. There’s nothing better than roaming the world and experiencing new cultures and drinking in breathtaking landscapes. Those of us in-the-know visit a travel clinic before we pack our suitcases and head off into the wilds of the world.
Unfortunately, there are still tons of illnesses out there in the wide world that visiting a travel clinic can protect us from. We may not catch scurvy like the pirates of olde, but we can surely catch yellow fever in parts of Asia, Africa, and Central and South America.
It’s funny, because we are so lucky in the United States that we sometimes forget that the world can be a very dangerous place, unforgiving for those unprepared. In many parts of the world a simple thing like clean drinking water is considered a luxury. We merely walk to our faucet to unleash a river of crystal-clear liquid that in many areas of the world would cause people to fight each other. Or worse.
Worldwide travel used to be considered a luxury, but in the last few decades it has become very reasonable. Hopping on a flight to someplace across the Atlantic Ocean is affordable for many people. Unfortunately, because of the economic climate these days, things may have changed a little bit. And yet it is still possible to save up and make a childhood dream vacation come true if you are truly committed.
If you keep a clear head when booking your trip, the only danger you will face while travelling abroad is of the medical variety. There are so many diseases still commonplace outside of our American comfort zone.
Let’s look at the above-mentioned yellow fever. It still infects over 250,000 people a year worldwide and will kill over 30,000. That’s a lot of people-and it’s just one disease out of many. A travel clinic can inoculate you to protect against yellow fever and a host of other potentially deadly diseases.
Europe
It’s been quite awhile since you’ve had to worry about contracting bubonic plague, but parts of Europe is still rampant with many STDs, the flu, West Nile fever, mad cow disease, and e. coli, to name but a few.
Central & South America
Malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, and cholera are just some of the deadly diseases that a certified travel clinic can offer vaccinations for as you go about watching the pretty birds and backpacking through the tropical rainforests.
Africa
This part of the world is probably the most dangerous. Any certified travel clinic will carefully analyze your travel itinerary and inoculate you so you are protected from diseases like typhoid, rabies, polio, hepatitis, cholera, meningitis… and many of the diseases mentioned under the other countries listed above.
A travel clinic has “got your back”, in the parlance of the time. They are proud to serve with professionalism and discretion, and know what is dangerous where. When making our childhood dreams of world travel a reality make sure to protect yourself.
