Where Does the Democratic Party Stand on Gay Marriage and Abortion?

What is the Democratic Party?

It is one of the major USA political parties. People who vote Democratic are also called “Liberals”. On the political spectrum, Democrats are considered to be on the left side while Republicans tend to be on the right side.

Here we will discuss some of the Democratic parties stand on controversial political issues.

1) Abortion-Democrats tend to be pro choice. Pro choice is the stand that it is the woman’s choice to keep the pregnancy or terminate the pregnancy. Planned Parenthood, NARAL Pro-Choice America, National Organization for Women, and the American Civil Liberties Union are the leading pro-choice groups. Most major feminist organizations also support pro-choice positions. In the United States, the Democratic party endorses the pro-choice position. They believes that abortion should be “safe, legal, and rare”. Most people who are pro choice are not pro abortion.

2) Gay marriage-Democrats tend to be more for gay marriage/rights than Republicans. However, Democrats seem to support civil unions and extending hate crimes to include gay people. This means that if someone was attacked because of their sexual orientation, the person who did the attacking would be charged with a hate crime. Republicans are against including gays and lesbians in hate crimes. President Barack Obama and Vice- Joseph Biden do not support gay marriage but they do support civil unions. They also hope to repel the “Don’t ask, don’t tell policy” saying that it is discriminating towards gay and lesbians.

As of right now, America is a pro choice country. Roe V. Wade has made this possible. In regards to gay marriage, some states allow civil unions/marriage. Those states are Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Jersey.
