Protein Shakes: Are They Worth It?

If you’ve been into weight training or dieting for any amount of time, I’m sure you’ve come across advertisements for protein shakes. More and more, people are deciding to get healthy again Along with that, the large increase in the popularity of protein shakes as gotten a lot of attention. As with most things, there are pros and cons to protein shakes, and you want to be aware of them when considering using the shakes.

What is in a protein supplement shake? Well, most of them include some sort of powdered protein and flavoring, mixed with milk, water or sometimes sugar. The protein powder is where you get the bits of protein that your body will use. Once you have that mixed with the other ingredients, you drink the whole thing down!

Many people use these kinds of shakes, especially those who are serious athletes or people who are trying to lower their daily caloric intake. Protein is important for your body, because it is the building block of muscle, so that is why protein shakes are pushed so much. People also use protein shakes in place of protein-rich food, when they are on a diet.

A lot of times though, the shakes are drank instead of eating snacks. When you want to grab a candy bar, which isn’t good for you, choosing instead to drink a shake is a good idea because it is healthy and will fill you up. The nutrients within it help you feel full for longer, when compared to eating carbs or fats.

If you are serious about building up more muscle mass, shakes can be a helpful supplement. They increase your protein level and give you increased energy. If you don’t get enough protein, don’t expect to gain much muscle. So choosing to drink these shakes is a better option than missing out on protein.

So, we’ve discussed the positive benefits of drinking protein supplement shakes, but what can the harm be from them? The only big problem when it comes to protein shakes is that you can get too much. Drinking too many of these shakes and or not exercising when you are using them, will create a build up of protein in your body. Since your body has more protein than it can handle, it will use it to create fat instead of muscle.

Protein certainly can be abused, if you are having too many. The thing is, you really don’t need protein shakes if you are getting the correct diet; but since doing that can be very tough, many people still choose the shake. Please, simply consider the good parts and the mentioned side effects of protein shakes when trying to use them.
