Mirtogenol is a natural food supplement which was found to have positive effects on reduction of the incidence of glaucoma.
Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in the United States in which there are more than 2.22 million U.S. citizens who have glaucoma and in 2020 it was estimated to increase by 50 percent to 3.6 million in 2020.
Mirtogenol is a combination of standardized bilberry extract which is called Mirtoselect and French maritime pine bark extract which is called Pycnogenol. Both of these medications have many benefits on eye.
Mirtoselect has benefits on retinal capillaries in which it will decrease the permeability of them and also it will improve ciliary body function. Ciliary body is the part inside the eye which is responsible of secretion of aqueous humor. Pycnogenol will help to generate nitrous oxide which will help in vascular function and endothelial cells function.A study was made on this medication and its effect on lowering intraocular pressure. This study shows that Mirtogenol significantly reduces the likelihood of developing glaucoma by decreasing the intraocular pressure
One theory on glaucoma is ischemic theory in which there is decrease in the blood flow to the optic nerve which makes this nerve susceptible to the damage induced by the high intraocular pressure. With this medication the intraocular blood flow will be improved, making the optic nerve less susceptible to high intraocular pressure.
This medication was found also to lower intraocular pressure by decrease the production of aqueous humor through ciliary body.
