The use of Dong Quai herbal supplement as a natural health remedy goes back thousands of years.

In Asian cultures it has been used as a tonic to help women’s reproductive systems. It is an extremely popular herb in many Asian counties, especially China and Japan, where it is second only to ginseng in its popularity.

Dong quai is extracted from the root of a plant called the angelica sinensi in China, in Japan the extract is taken from the acutilob.

These plants have close to a two and a half meter hollow stem, which is topped with a cluster of white flowers, shaped like an umbrella.

The main use for dong quai has been to relieve the variety of symptoms associated with women’s health, generally gynecological in nature.

It is thought that the dong quai herb helps promote uterine health, and help maintain a regular and healthy menstrual cycle.

So, why does dong quai help? Well, studies have suggested that coumarins within dong quai are responsible. Coumarins have been shown to dilate blood vessels, improve the blood flow in the body and to stimulate and nervous system.

Other information suggests that coumarins relax muscles within the uterus, which would go some way to explaining why dong quai has been effective for women in relieving menstrual cramps.

Dong quai is even thought to improve the symptoms of PMS and help to regulate menstrual cycles. In fact, there are many women who use dong quai to treat amenorrhea (menstrual cycles that are irregular or missing) and heavy or excessively long periods. The improvements felt by women are attributed to the anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic actions of the herb.

There are also a number of other benefits that have been attributed to dong quai. These are:

– A reduction in pain associated with endometriosis, especially when used in combinations with other natural herbs chasteberry.

– More effective control over menopausal hot flashes, especially when used in combination with ginseng and black cohosh.

As well as the health benefits outline above dong quai is a good source of vitamin B12, which helps stimulate the production of red blood cells.

Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners and doctors have long prescribed dong quai for problems with circulation and for high blood pressure.

Dong quai, in combination with other herbs has often been prescribed as it is believed to provide a mild dilation of blood vessels, which it is thought, can help increase the pumping action of the heart and improve blood flow.
