The term “super foods” has become a popular phrase on the news and talk
shows. What is considered a super food? What will a super food do for you?
Super foods are foods that contain more than the average amount of nutrients.
These foods are packed full of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, vitamins and
minerals. They will aid your over all health outlook as well as specified areas
such as heart health and cancer risks.
Blueberries –
You know these little berries. They used to stain your hands when you went
out to pick them. Your mother or grandmother may have made them up into a
pie for you to consume. They are made into wonderful jams and jellies. Now
they are considered a super food.
Blueberries are packed full of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory,
phytoflavinoids, vitamin C and potassium. These things are good for your
heart, liver and will lower your risk of cancer.
Acai Berries –
Rather new on the market is the acai berry. It is crammed with nutrients.
They have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, Omega-3, Omega-6 as
well as Omega-9. It is said to have all the benefits of the blueberry, but
the added benefit of lowering your bad cholesterol levels.
Flax Seeds –
These little seeds have been around awhile, but are gaining popularity. You
can now find flax seed oil as well as flax seed flour. These small brown
seeds contain an essential fatty acid Omega-3. They are said to have a
positive effect on heart disease and your cholesterol levels. Add to that,
there are studies that show they reduce your risk of cancer.
Strawberries –
These favorite red fruit contain vitamin C as well as provide a source of
flavonoids, iron and folic acid. An added bonus is that they only contain
about 60 calories and are a wonderful source of fiber. They are said to
fight off the common cold along with other benefits of Vitamin C. Folic acid
is an important nutrient for mothers to be as well.
This is only a very small list of foods listed as super foods. You can add
to this list; avocadoes, soy, green tea and yes you can even add dark
chocolate. These foods are great for your diet and your health. Use them in
moderation in the simplest form as possible.
