There’s no doubt that the medifast shakes are the food item that I am most often asked about. This item is undoubtedly what this diet is known for. I’m often asked just how healthy these shakes are. The truth is, I believe that they are very nutritionally sound. I will tell you exactly why I feel this way in the following article.
Nutritional Information On The Medifast 55 Shakes: I’m going to give you an overview of this item because I believe that this is what you’re most likely to consume. The reason for this is that this is the item that is most often included in the diet’s packages. You do have to blend or mix this product but I believe that it’s worth it because this one is the best tasting shakes which has the best texture. There are many flavor options here too such as banana creme, Dutch chocolate, French vanilla, orange creme, strawberry creme, and Swiss mocha (my personal favorite, which I will sometimes mix with coffee.)
All of these shakes are a vegetarian product which is also kosher, gluten free, and low in lactose. Most people find them to be very gentle on the stomach and easily digestible. This item has approximately 90 calories per serving. Only 10 of these calories come from fat. Speaking of fat, each serving of these contains only one gram which I find to be very impressive. These contain only 8 grams of sugars but 4 grams of fiber. There are 13 grams of carbs and 11 grams of protein.
This combination is very important because it allows your body to get into ketosis which is where you will be using and burning fat rather than carbs or sugar. Not all diets will get you here. What is required is a low enough amount of calories and carbs and a high enough amount of proteins. Take a look at many other popular diet shakes and I suspect you will find that most contain much higher amounts of calories and carbs and potentially less fiber and protein.
This product contains anywhere from 15 – 60% of the recommended daily allowance of around 25 vitamins and minerals, which again is very impressive when you compare it to other similar products.
Nutrient Facts On The Medifast Ready To Drink Shakes: The next item that I’m going to overview is the ready to drink variety. This is probably the second most popular item on the menu. People like these because you don’t have to assemble or mix them. You just insert the straw and go about your way (although you may want to shake them well.) These come in the flavors of Dutch chocolate and French vanilla.
The nutritional content of these are very similar to the 55. There are around 90 calories with 10 of them coming from fat. There is only 1.5 total grams of fat. There are six grams of sugars and 4 grams of fibers with 12 carbs and 11 proteins. As you can see, these will have no trouble getting you in ketosis as well. Because of the low amount of sugars, all of these options are completely fine for diabetics. This option also has a similar vitamin and mineral content as the 55 product that I outlined above.
It’s important to note that there are many different shake products within the medifast diet. There are options for diabetics, women in menopause, women with joint or inflammatory issues, and women who are interested in increasing their metabolism. The flavors offered are slightly different with each variety, but the nutritional information is quite similar for all of the varieties.
In general, the company keeps all of it’s “meals” below 100 calories and makes sure that there is a high protein content with a low carb and calorie content. So no matter which variety or flavor that you chose, you’re “safe” in terms of ketosis.
